Director
In 1993 Brian invited the existing Enoggera Creek Committee, under the leadership of Trevor Ozanne, a lecturer in horticulture at Grovely TAFE, to form the nucleus of the steering committee to establish SOWN. The SOWN committee was formed on 1 March 1994 and, because it had not been incorporated, operated under the wing of the Men of The Trees Inc.
SOWN was extremely fortunate to recruit Brian Sait, who took SOWN to his heart and with his energy and enthusiasm, was a driving force behind its success. Brian Sait, among his many other achievements, set up a plant propagation group at Iona Retirement Village, which gave the inspiration to Brian Hallinan to create GOSSIP (Golden Oldies Seed Sowing Implantation Project).
SOWN Nursery
Many volunteers help out at the Nursery on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, propagating, sorting plants, preparing seed, watering, washing tubes and countless other tasks needed to keep the nursery ticking over and supplying plants to members.
SOWN Environment Centre
SOWN has a license to occupy the premises at 98 Yoorala Street overlooking the creek where Vera and Fred Moffett worked for many years. Previously the building had been the Gap Pony Club. An area for horses still remains in the open space.
SOWN is in the process of developing plans to upgrade the building to accommodate a botanic garden, an indigenous garden, a nursery and meeting areas.
Other community groups are welcome to use the facilities at the SOWN Environment Centre. For information, please contact Secretary, Anne Jones.
